Kind regards In the attachment are 2 small videos on the same maschine the same host with latest OS-Patches slightly a big difference between V15 and V Labels 1. Tags 8. Tags: 15 OK. OS build: Other than upgrading the kernel, I’d consider switching the drive type.
Thanks for taking a look and for the suggestion. I am on a newer Linux kernel right now 5. I may give this some more thought but no sure if I am ready for an upgrade right now. So far so good. I’ll keep an eye on the performance and let you know if this helped. Fingers crossed. Linux VM became buggy too. Interesting thing 1: is that its bugging VERY rarely. But its obviously bugging too.
I see 20 seconds of normal work and then 20 seconds of hard lagging where even GUI almost doesn’t respond. Then 20 seconds of normal again. And so on. Only ONE time. However, windows VMs lag after hours of work. Another Interesting fact 2 is that the more VMs opened.
If I work with two VMs linux and win10 I can work for approximately. Then one of Windows Server Like nothing is lagging. No process eats time. Very strange. I’m pretty sure this is either a bug in VMWare workstation or Ubuntu The thing is that I there were both. And finally another Interesting thing 4: if I switch the memory option Always fit VMs in memory switch to Allow some VMs memory to be swapped , this entire bug begins to appear much more often.
And like I already said,. I’m posting this to encourage others to come up if they have the same situation so we can gram some attention from Vmware. I am glad you are sharing your experience; however, I wonder if there is a better way to report bugs than here in this community thread?
I am still seeing the same performance issues as others in this thread even after switching to an NVMe vhd type for my Windows 10 Pro guest. Could Linux be an “unpopular” platform with regard to VMware Workstation Pro, and explain why we are experiencing this issue with guest VM performance?
In the last year or two I have seen what I consider a loss in quality that shouldn’t be with a paid for desktop virtualization platform such as Workstation Pro and Fusion. That being said, whether it’s difficult, or not, paying customers are paying customers, until they are not. Being a Windows user primarily until about a year ago switched to Linux on the desktop and FreeBSD for my home server I was spoiled, and it made my progress in learning about computers suffer.
Perhaps I need to make the switch to a new desktop hypervisor, too? And I digress There was a step that I missed before opening a support case see: my previous reply where a PDF is mentioned in the steps to get support :. No, thanks. With all the jumping through hoops multiple incoherent redirects, including a PDF , this company’s support resources reek of horrible quality development teams, and I don’t want to waste more time on likely an equally horrible IVR.
When I attempted to register a product using the license key provided by VMUG, I advance to the next page after entering the license key, and all I see is a “Continue” button. There’s no way to view my registered products. There’s no success message. There’s no error message. Again, reeking of horrible quality development teams for VMware support services.
On ESXi, run this command in the command line to check whether your server is overloaded:. Press these keys to change the view: c – CPU metrics is displayed by default , m — memory, n — network, d — disk. Press space to update displayed values the values are updated automatically every 5 seconds. Press h for help and q to quit. The MEM overcommit avg value is as follows: the ratio of the requested memory to the available memory minus 1.
The recommended value of this parameter is 0 or less. Check running processes and find the one that loads the CPU. Upgrade hardware — install a more powerful CPU or more processors on the host. Check VM configuration. If the number of virtual processors for VMs is more than needed, reduce the number of virtual processors for VMs to free up resources for the host.
Low performance of a storage system causes low performance of virtual machines that store virtual disks on this storage system. Storage latency is critical for VM performance. Hard disk drives with RPM provide extra low performance. Using disks with SAS interface is preferred.
In production environments, use non-growable or preallocated thick disks. Eager-zeroed thick provisioned disks are faster for first write operations. If you use an HDD to store VMs, perform defragmentation of this physical disk drive or array, and perform defragmentation of a virtual disk in virtual machine settings. Use partitions to reduce disk fragmentation. Install an operating system on one partition, store files used by applications for example, a database on another partition.
Update firmware of your HBA on a server. Check disk health. Perform diagnostics of the disk and file system. If the disk is corrupted, replace the disk immediately.
Disk encryption reduces performance due to overheads. Move VM files to non-encrypted storage if encryption is not critical for the VM, or turn off disk encryption.
Make sure that there is free space on a disk inside a VM. Insufficient disk space causes performance degrading because an operating system and applications cannot write temporary files. You can migrate your VM to another disk or disk array that is not overloaded.
Virtual disk snapshots reduce virtual disk performance. Each snapshot produces an additional delta VMDK file of a virtual disk. The copy-on-write mechanism is used. As a result, data is read from multiple virtual disk files on the same physical disk, and this reduces VM performance. Disk overload increases as the number of snapshots grows.
